Abstract

Objective: This study aims to examine the relationship between indications for induction of labor and ultimate mode of delivery after labor induction.
Study Design: Cross-sectional study.
Place and Duration of Study: This study was conducted at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Combined Military Hospital (CMH), Okara, Pakistan, from 15th October 2023 to 15th March 2024.
Methods: A total of 300 females were included with a non-probability consecutive sampling method. Gravid patients aged 15-45 years, singleton gestations in cephalic presentation at term undergoing induction of labor after written informed consent and consultant's advice were included in the study. While females with multiple gestations, previous cesarean delivery, malpresentation at term, placenta accreta spectrum, and antepartum hemorrhage were excluded from the study. At the time of labor induction, patients' demographic details, obstetric history, body mass index, gestational age, preinduction of labor bishop (IOL Bishop score), method of induction of labor, and indication of labor induction were noted. Data were stratified for age, gestational age at delivery, BMI, and indication of induction of labor. Chi-Square test was used to associate indications and maternal outcome in relation to mode of delivery in stratified groups by using Chi-Square test for each stratum. A P-value ≤ 0.05 was considered
significant.
Results: The most common indication of induction of labor was fetal macrosomia (42.6%), followed by spontaneous rupture of membranes SROM (24%) and postdated pregnancy (22.6%). A notable majority, comprising 77.3% of cases, experienced spontaneous vaginal delivery. Conversely, lower segment cesarean section was employed in 22.7% of cases.
Conclusion: The study reported favorable maternal outcomes, with the majority of patients achieving
spontaneous vaginal deliveries. The rate of Cesarean section was relatively low, indicating evidence-based and
successful management of labor induction.
